Uncaptive Minds is a quarterly journal of the Institute for Democracy in Eastern Europe devoted to providing information and analysis on the democratic movements in Eastern Europe (from East Germany to eastern Siberia) that brought an end to communism and fought to bring about a democratic transition in their countries. It published 35 issues from 1988-97, featuring the leading activists, thinkers, and political figures from the opposition, human rights, and democracy movements.
For the first time, all 35 issues of Uncaptive Minds are being made available in their entirety in digital format (in process). Unfortunately, the full volumes are only in English. However, many articles have been translated into Spanish for use on the DemocracyforCuba.org website in the Los Caminos and Democracy Pamphlets.
Uncaptive Minds is a unique journal focusing on that period in Eastern Europe. If you want to find out about the movements for democracy — and the movements against dictatorship — in the region, Uncaptive Minds was the only journal focused on the region that featured those from the region. It was an open forum for people within the region who otherwise had people outside the region writing about them, lecturing to them, and speaking on their behalf without ever speaking to them or really understanding their conditions. Uncaptive Minds let the democrats speak for themselves and the result is a remarkable collection of articles and interviews unparalleled in the field of democracy studies.
It was not possible to break down the issues into individual articles, and the full issues were too large to post, so each of the issues are presented in three parts. Each of the parts repeats the Table of Contents to assist the reader in finding articles in each section. The files are in a large format to make it easier to read, but it may require the user to choose a different % size page (50 percent, 75 percent, 100 percent or higher) for optimum reading. The files are digitally scanned — and thus quite large — so the files may take awhile to download even on a newer computer. If the computer is older, it may take a few minutes. But DemocracyforCuba.org considers the time is well spent.
